The am/pm Japan Co. convenience store chain plans to launch a full-fledged home parcel delivery service in Tokyo, company officials said Wednesday.

The company will handle parcels weighing 25 kg or less for delivery within the capital's 23 wards for a uniform fee of 600 yen, roughly one-third of the charge levied by existing operators, they said.

Parcels taken by midnight at am/pm stores should arrive at their destinations by noon the next day, they said.

The company approved the Urban Night Cargo service after a two-month door-to-door delivery trial in February conducted via an alliance with transport company Japanbridge Co.

The experimental service was launched at four outlets in central Tokyo and has since expanded to 10 stores.

With about a half of its 1,370 stores located within the 23 wards, am/pm Japan expects its urban network to help meet potentially strong demand for delivery of a variety of business-related items.
