House of Representatives member Takanori Sakai was indicted Friday on a charge of violating the Political Funds Control Law by concealing 168 million yen in corporate donations.
Sakai, 55, was arrested earlier on suspicion of concealing 120 million yen in donations, but the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office added another 48 million yen in shady donations that it has confirmed to the charge.
It will be the first time a lawmaker will stand trial for allegedly violating the Political Funds Control Law alone.
Prosecutors also modified the indictment for Sakai's policy secretary, Aki Shionoya, 38, who has been awaiting trial in connection with the case.
Sources close to the prosecutors said Sakai has denied the charges against him.
Although the Lower House has passed a resolution urging him him to resign, Sakai has refused to comply.
