Japan will provide Afghanistan with $22.62 million in grants in aid for its reconstruction, Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi said Tuesday.
Of the total, $21.85 million will be extended through the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees to create jobs and promote education, while $770,000 will be provided through the U.N. Development Program to help Afghanistan establish a constitution, ministry officials said.
The aid is part of $500 million in assistance pledged by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at an international conference in January 2002 on rebuilding Afghanistan.
