U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton canceled his meetings Thursday with Japanese officials due to illness, according to Foreign Ministry officials.
Bolton, who oversees arms control and international security affairs, was scheduled to meet with Shinzo Abe, deputy chief Cabinet secretary; Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi; and Vice Foreign Minister Yukio Takeuchi.
Officials were trying to reschedule the talks.
Bolton arrived in Japan for a three-day visit from Seoul, where he met Choi Sung Hong, South Korean foreign affairs and trade minister, in an effort to coordinate measures aimed at resolving the standoff over North Korea's nuclear development program.
Bolton was scheduled to attend a senior official-level meeting on arms control and disarmament on Friday.
