Prosecutors on Wednesday demanded a six-year prison term for a former Defense Agency official indicted on charges of breach of trust and bribery in connection with equipment deliveries to the agency's procurement office in the mid-1990s.

Appearing before the Tokyo District Court, prosecutors demanded that Kenichi Ueno, 63, a former deputy chief of the now-defunct Central Procurement Office, also pay about 8.38 million yen in fines.

Ueno is accused of conspiring with others to reduce the amount defense contractors were to pay back after overcharging the agency for equipment from 1994 to 1995.
