The Fair Trade Commission is investigating whether planned airfare discounts on the Haneda-Miyazaki route by Japan's three major airlines are in violation of antimonopoly laws, FTC Secretary General Akio Yamada said Wednesday.
The fare cuts were seemingly announced in a bid to fend off new market entrant Skynet Asia Airways, Yamada said.
"We have grave concern about the airlines following the fares of a new entrant and setting fares at a similar or lower level," Yamada said. "We are carrying out an investigation."
