The return rush from the Bon midsummer holidays continued Sunday as vacationers jammed roads, railway stations and airports while returning to Tokyo from hometowns and tourist resorts throughout Japan.
The Japan Railway companies said reserved seats for most Tokyo-bound bullet trains on the Tohoku and Tokaido Shinkansen lines were fully booked. Non-reserved seats for bullet trains departing Akita as well as those leaving Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture, recorded occupancy rates of more than 100 percent.
Traffic bound for Tokyo on the Tomei, Chuo and Kanetsu highways was relatively light in the morning but became heavy in the afternoon, according to the Japan Road Traffic Information Center. Sunday was the last day of the Bon holiday period.
