Domestic shipments of mobile phones and personal handy-phone system handsets fell 6.5 percent in June from a year earlier to 4.086 million units, down for the 13th consecutive month, an industry association said Thursday.
Shipments of mobile phones, including car phones, fell 4.3 percent to 3.967 million units from a year earlier, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association.
Shipments of mobile phones and PHS handsets in the April-June quarter declined 24.1 percent from a year earlier to 10.439 million units. Shipments of mobile phones alone fell 22.4 percent to 10.099 million units.
Compared with May, however, shipments of mobile phones grew 26.1 percent, up for the fourth consecutive month, to almost 4 million units as demand rose for high value-added mobile handsets, especially ones equipped with cameras, the association said.
Camera-equipped handsets accounted for about 30 percent of mobile handset shipments in the April-June period, the association said, adding the percentage is likely to increase.
Shipments of PHS handsets fell 47.9 percent to 118,000 units, down for the 16th consecutive month.
In the April-June quarter, shipments of PHS handsets plunged 54.4 percent from a year earlier to 340,000 units.
The shipment data were based on figures supplied by 16 mobile phone manufacturers and 16 PHS makers.
