The 56-year-old owner of a Tokyo soba noodle shop was shot in the chest Sunday by his younger brother, who used a a retooled Italian model gun with a handmade bullet, police said.
The man was hospitalized, but his wound is not life-threatening, they said.
According to police, Seiichi Otsuka was shot by his younger brother, Yoshio, at the eatery in the Shiroganedai district of Minato Ward at around 10:40 a.m.
Police arrested Yoshio, who lives in Kanuma, Toshigi Prefecture, for attempted murder. The suspect had holed up in the restaurant's kitchen prior to the arrest. In addition to the retooled model gun, the man had two knives and two handmade bombs made of iron pipes, they said.
According to the investigation, the suspect said that he had been feuding with his brother over the family inheritance for several years.
"If we could not solve the dispute, I was going to kill my brother and then myself," the suspect was quoted as telling police.
Investigators said Yoshio visited his brother with his weapons stored in a bag. At the entrance of the restaurant he fired a shot from the model gun at his brother.
The suspect said he had revamped the gun and made the bullet and the bombs himself, they added.
The restaurant was closed at the time and no one else was present, police said.
