The education ministry has determined that Teikyo University violated a government ban on donations from preadmission students and will demand that it return more than 8 billion yen in subsidies, ministry sources said Wednesday.
The government gave 6.385 billion yen in subsidies to the Tokyo-based university between fiscal 1997 and 2001. Education ministry officials said the ministry will demand that the school return the money plus 11 percent a year as a penalty, bringing the total to more than 8 billion yen.
The ministry made the decision after its inspectors concluded a three-day on-site investigation at the university as part of a probe into questionable donations from students seeking admission to its medical school.
