Honda Motor Co. said Monday its group net profit rose 20.4 percent to a record 107.6 billion yen in the April-June quarter from a year earlier on strong sales and a weaker yen.

Group sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2002 came to 1.94 trillion yen, up 10 percent from a year earlier, the automaker said.

If the yen's rate had remained unchanged against the dollar and euro, group sales would have grown only 6.5 percent, Honda said.

Its group operating profit was up 12.8 percent to 170.82 billion yen and pretax profit increased 20.7 percent to 163.70 billion yen, it said.

By business segment, Honda sold 1.83 million motorcycles in the quarter, up 33.4 percent. Though domestic sales fell 13.8 percent to 94,000 units, overseas sales jumped 37.4 percent to 1.73 million units on gains in North America and Asia, Honda said.

The company's automobile sales rose 8.8 percent to 694,000 units. Domestic sales inched up 2.9 percent to 213,000 units on increases in sales of the Fit, Mobilio and That's vehicles, it said.

Overseas auto sales grew 11.6 percent to 481,000 units due mainly to strong sales in North America of the Pilot and CR-V vehicles, it said.
