Japan will raise tariffs on pork for eight months beginning this week in an attempt to slow soaring imports, the government said Monday.
Beginning Thursday, the standard import price for a dressed pig carcass, based on which tariffs are levied, will be raised to 510.03 yen per kg from 409.90 yen, according to the Finance Ministry and the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry.
The standard price for cut meat will be raised to 681.08 yen from 546.53 yen per kg, the ministries said. The emergency import restrictions will stay in place through March 31.
