The Diet passed a bill Wednesday aimed at redrawing electoral districts in an effort to correct the imbalance in the value of votes cast in rural and urban areas.
The House of Councilors approved the bill to amend the Public Offices Election Law during a plenary session.
It was passed with the support of the ruling bloc -- the Liberal Democratic Party, New Komeito and the New Conservative Party -- as well as the Democratic Party of Japan and the Social Democratic Party.
