Suzuki Motor Corp. revealed Tuesday it has developed a direct-injection turbo minivehicle engine it may install in its MR Wagon Sport vehicle.

The price tag on vehicles equipped with the new engine will probably be several tens of thousands of yen higher than the 1.34 million yen usually charged for an MR Wagon Sport, according to the nation's largest minivehicle producer.

Direct-injection engines are known for their fuel efficiency and low emissions as they inject gasoline directly into a vehicle's combustion chamber.

Suzuki's new engine has been certified as both an ultra- and low-emission vehicle engine by the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry, the first turbo engine to get this certification, the automaker said.

The 64-horsepower engine has the same power output as the engine currently used in the MR Wagon Sport, it said.
