Fujitsu Ltd. will reduce the workforce at its print board operations in Japan by around 1,000, in line with a plan to transfer production to Vietnam, company officials said Thursday.
Fujitsu will offer early retirement, possibly by month's end, to 600 of the 1,000 workers, and transfer 400 to a new company it plans to establish.
Domestic print board production will be terminated in late September and transferred to a subsidiary in Vietnam, the officials said.
A new company specializing in developing print boards will be set up Oct. 1 in Nagano Prefecture and capitalized at around 4 billion yen.
Workers at factories in Nagano, Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture; and Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture; will be affected.
Fujitsu cut 22,000 workers, including dispatched employees, in fiscal 2001.
The officials said the additional restructuring step will be taken as print board operations are proving less profitable amid the information technology slump.
Fujitsu posted 417 billion yen in restructuring-related losses in the year to March 31 due to its massive staff reduction.
Print boards are used in telecommunications equipment.
It expects losses of around 40 billion yen related to restructuring costs in the current business year to next March, which will cover the costs of its recent decision.
