Sony Corp. and NEC Corp. have cut the shipment prices on some of their personal computers by 10,000 yen to 20,000 yen in response to price reductions by other computer makers, company officials said Wednesday.
The Sony models subject to the cuts are the laptop Vaio FX and the desktop Vaio JX; NEC is discounting many of its 37 PC models.
Toshiba Corp. recently released a 180,000 yen computer that would have normally sold for 220,000 yen, Toshiba officials said.
IBM Japan Ltd. and other non-Japanese makers announced plans earlier this month to cut their prices. Just a few months ago, many PC makers marked up their prices to cope with an increase in cost of parts.
Sharp Corp. has also cut the shipment prices of some of its computer models, industry sources said.
