The tripartite ruling coalition crafted a bill Tuesday that would give economic protections to existing liquor shops, coalition officials said.
The Liberal Democratic Party, New Komeito and the New Conservative Party hope to pass the bill during the current Diet session, which ends July 31, as it is attracting support from some opposition lawmakers.
The legislation would be good for three years. The sponsors of the bill will want it to take effect by Aug. 31.
