OSAKA -- Sanyo Electric Co. plans to start production of liquid crystal display projectors and plasma display panel television sets in China early next year, a company official said Thursday.
The move reflects expectations of an increase in demand for such flat-display TVs in China in tandem with the country's economic growth and its high tariffs on such products, the official said.
At present, Sanyo produces PDP TVs domestically and does not export them to China due to high tariffs.
It will make LCD projectors and PDP TVs at a plant in Guangdong Province that currently produces cathode-ray tube TVs, the official said.
Monthly production is targeted at about 1,000 units for LCD projectors, and no target has been set yet for PDP TVs, the official said.
