A 38-year-old Tokyo police officer was arrested Tuesday for allegedly groping a female subway passenger the night before.
Sgt. Masakazu Kamimura of the Metropolitan Police Department allegedly fondled an 18-year-old woman two or three times inside a train on the Chiyoda Line.
Kamimura, who said he was on his way home, appeared to be drunk at the time.
"The train was crowded and I was jostled around when I touched her," Kamimura reportedly told investigators following his arrest.
Police said Kamimura, a sergeant in charge of international terrorism at the MPD's First Alien Affairs Division, was being held under the nuisance law.
"We want to express our profound apology to the victim," Takashi Sugimoto, head of the MDP First Alien Affairs Division, said in a statement.
