Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Toray Industries Inc. said Tuesday they will build a second domestic plant to manufacture plasma display panels to push their joint global PDP output above 1.5 million units a year.
The new plant will be in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, and run by the alliance's joint venture, Matsushita Plasma Display Panel Co., the two said.
The new plant, to be built at a cost of 60 billion yen, will begin operations in April 2004 and turn out 80,000 PDPs a month, they said.
Once the factory goes online, the alliance's combined annual output, including PDPs made at the venture's first factory in Osaka and Shanghai Matsushita Plasma Display Co. in China, will eclipse 1.5 million units, they said.
