Sales of imported vehicles in Japan dropped 4.4 percent in February from a year earlier to 20,129 units, down for sixth consecutive month, the Japan Automobile Importers Association said Wednesday.
Sales of vehicles manufactured by foreign automakers dropped 4.9 percent to 18,848 units, while those made at Japanese automakers' overseas factories climbed 4.1 percent to 1,281 units.
By maker, German automakers took the three top positions in terms of sales in Japan's imported vehicle market in February.
Volkswagen AG was the top seller, with a 25.31 percent market share and sales of 5,095 units, down 9.7 percent, followed by Mercedes-Benz with a 16.58 percent market share and sales of 3,338 units, down 10.7 percent.
BMW AG came third with a 11.31 percent share at 2,277 units sold, down 5.6 percent.
PSA Peugeot Citroen of France came fourth, with a 4.83 percent share and sales of 972 units, up 33.3 percent. Volvo Car Corp. of Sweden ranked fifth with a 4.81 percent share and sales of 968 units, down 3 percent.
Honda Motor Co. ranked sixth with sales surging 47.1 percent to 877 units.
Germany's Adam Opel AG and Audi AG came in seventh and eighth, respectively. Opel's sales plunged 24.1 percent to 808 units, while Audi's sales jumped 81.6 percent to 732 units.
