A gunman shot and killed a yakuza boss who was under police guard Monday morning in the intensive care unit at Nippon Medical School Hospital in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo.
Police said the shooter then fled the scene.
The victim, Takashi Ishizuka, 54, was the leader of Yano-gumi, a group affiliated with the Sumiyoshi-kai underworld syndicate. He was in the ICU after being shot and seriously wounded Sunday evening in Toshima Ward by a man believed to be in his 50s.
