Senior officials from 14 Asian countries and territories will attend a seminar in Tokyo next week to learn more about enhancing export controls in an effort to counter terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The officials will gather from Tuesday to Thursday for the annual seminar, organized by the semipublic Center for Information on Security Trade Control on commission from METI and the Foreign Ministry.
The ninth such seminar will address the issues of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, along with regular subjects, such as export-control problems.
The participants will be bureau officials or section chief-level officials from Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Officials representing Japan, the U.S., Australia, Britain and South Korea will also share their knowhow and exchange views during the seminar.
Sessions will also be held on specific topics such as the balance between free trade and export controls, and problems associated with export controls of multipurpose products, the ministry said.
