Nissan Motor Co. and NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Tuesday they will jointly study and develop a "telematics" service based on the cellular phone giant's third-generation mobile communications technologies.
The companies aim to begin providing the service in 2003.
Telematics services give drivers access to news and weather, as well as information on nearby restaurants and entertainment facilities through onboard devices such as navigation systems. Many devices employ touch panel displays, but some feature voice command systems.
