Snow Brand Food Co., already hit by a scandal relating to mad cow disease and falsely labeled meat, on Monday admitted that two Snow Brand employees intentionally mislabeled beef originating from Hokkaido to pass it off as being from Kumamoto Prefecture.
Sometime around Sept. 21, two employees at the company's Kansai Meat Center in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, falsely labeled 20 kg to 30 kg of beef produced in Hokkaido as being from Kumamoto Prefecture, said Susumu Fujita, manager of the Procurement Department at Snow Brand Food.
Fujita said the employees then shipped the mislabeled meat on Sept. 22 or Sept. 23 to up to 10 wholesalers and retailers in the Kansai region.
