OSAKA -- Failed supermarket chain operator Mycal Corp. announced Monday that it will close 19 outlets nationwide, including Otaru Vivre in Hokkaido and Toyoda Saty in Aichi Prefecture.
It is the first large-scale reduction of existing outlets since Mycal, which filed for court protection in September, began rehabilitation efforts with the backing of major retailer Aeon Co., formerly known as Jusco Co.
According to company officials, the timing of the closures, as well as the fate of some 3,460 employees and part-time workers who work at the 19 outlets, will be decided after discussions with its labor union and landowners.
