Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi marked his 60th birthday Tuesday by pledging to make an all-out effort in his job as the nation's leader.
"In the past, reaching one's 60th birthday was considered living long," he said of the term "kanreki." "I think the feeling was strong that it was the start of a second life.
"I have spent 30 years as a politician, and have experienced much," Koizumi continued. "But now that I have reached 60, I plan to make an all-out effort in my job as prime minister as if I were making a fresh start, reminding myself of my first resolutions."
Koizumi had a birthday lunch with members of his Cabinet at his official residence and received a single rose and a card from reporters.
