After spending their New Year's holidays out of town, people continued to jam air and train services back into Tokyo on Sunday, although traffic jams on highways were not as severe as on Saturday.
Airlines reported almost all their Tokyo-bound flights were fully booked, and Japan Airlines said the number of standby passengers at Fukuoka airport waiting for Tokyo-bound JAL flights swelled at one point to around 350.
Trains on the Japan Railway group's Tokyo-bound Shinkansen lines started getting packed in the afternoon, including Hikari 102 from Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture and Yamabiko 16 from Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, the company said.
As for Tokyo-bound highways, no major traffic jams were reported Sunday afternoon, with congestion levels similar to those on a regular holiday, according to the Japan Road Traffic Information Center.
