Members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly possess assets worth 45.86 million yen on average, down 45 percent from four years ago, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Friday.
While real estate prices continued to decline over 2001, several veteran members retired, including a former chairman who claimed to have assets of 3.4 billion yen.
This pushed the average further downward.
In accordance with new financial disclosure rules, all 127 assembly members revealed the value of their assets, with the exception of golf course memberships and so-called loans receivable.
The members' average debts came to 30.69 million yen, according to the data.
Land and real estate accounted for 90 percent of assets, with "land millionaires" topping the wealth rankings.
Eleven members had assets worth more than 100 million yen, compared with 15 four years ago. All 11 are members of the Liberal Democratic Party and seven are from the suburban western district of Tama.
On average, LDP members have assets worth 94.03 million yen, New Komeito members have assets worth 10.58 million yen, Democratic Party of Japan members 8.03 million yen, Japanese Communist Party members 6.87 million yen and Seikatsusha Network members 2.19 million yen.
The LDP's Toshio Hiruma topped the rankings, disclosing assets worth 816.13 million yen. Land owned by Hiruma in his constituency of Fuchu, western Tokyo, makes up 780 million yen of the total.
Seventy-five members have assets worth less than 10 million yen. Of these, four are LDP members, four are DPJ members, one represents New Komeito and one the JCP.
One independent member claimed to possess no assets, the data show.
