The government will divert some 250 billion yen in revenue from the car weight tax, currently funneled into road construction, to other purposes in fiscal 2002, government sources said Saturday.
Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Chikage Ogi and Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa will formally reach an accord in a meeting Tuesday to draft the budget for fiscal 2002, which begins in April, the sources said.
A total of 675.2 billion yen of the automobile weight tax is allocated for road construction in the fiscal 2001 budget.
