OSAKA -- Sharp Corp. is considering introducing different wages according to job types so that some employees may be paid as much as 20 percent more than others, a company official said Thursday.
The system would involve the roughly 26,000 employees at Sharp and its group companies in Japan who are currently paid the same regardless of job type, the official said.
The company hopes the system will help reduce labor costs by putting a brake on raises, the official said.
Under the system being considered, workers in jobs judged to contribute highly to the company will be paid more, and differences will also be set according to workplace location and job content, the official said.
Starting in April, Sharp will adopt a system under which employees who choose not to be transferred to workplaces in other regions will be paid less.
That and the planned wage differences are expected to bring down total labor costs by as much as 5 percent, according to the official.
