The girl born Dec. 1 to the Crown Prince and Crown Princess has been named Princess Aiko, the Imperial Household Agency said Friday.
The name was bestowed by the Emperor in a ceremony based on Imperial family tradition on the seventh day after the baby was born. Both Princess Aiko and her mother are expected to leave the Imperial Household Hospital today.
As is customary in the Imperial family, the princess was also given another official appellation, Princess Toshi, by which she will be called in her youth, according to Hirofumi Oka, head of the agency's General Affairs Division.
