Promoting technologies that would ease climate change could boost economic growth and employment significantly by 2010, according to a report being put together by a think tank commissioned by the Environment Ministry.
Redirecting 1.6 trillion yen annually in government spending to 20 specific technologies -- including solar power and fuel cells -- would add 2.1 trillion yen to the nation's gross domestic product by 2010, boosting it by more than a third of a percentage point and creating 180,000 jobs, according to a draft report by Tokyo-based Research Institute for Systems Technology.
The report was obtained by The Japan Times this week.
