Innovative animation director Hayao Miyazaki has set a new Japanese box-office record with his latest film "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" ("Spirited Away"), according to film distributor Toho Co.
Toho said Miyazaki's animated movie has drawn about 20.15 million people and revenues of 26 billion yen in the 114 days since its July 20 release. The figures broke Japan's previous box-office record for the U.S. epic "Titanic."
"I'm not particular about being praised for the movie. My wish is only to make a movie that the children who watch it now would want to show to their children as well. That is how much I want the film to endure and be treasured," Miyazaki, 60, told about 100 reporters and visitors at a news conference Tuesday in a Tokyo hotel.
