Japan for the first time called on the United States to improve regulations in the electricity industry during two days of energy talks that ended Tuesday.
At working-level talks in Tokyo, Japan demanded that the U.S. simplify regulations that conflict at the state and federal levels, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Japan also demanded the U.S. clarify the schedule for U.S. power sector liberalization, according to the ministry.
The demands reflect growing interest among Japanese companies in launching and strengthening overseas operations, a ministry official said.
On the other hand, the U.S. urged Japan to set clear goals and a schedule for liberalizing its electricity and gas sectors, according to U.S. government officials.
