A basic national energy policy moved a step closer to fruition Tuesday as the ruling coalition agreed to submit a relevant bill to the Diet during the current session.

The bill calls for securing stable energy supplies by developing energy sources and lessening dependence on specific regions for energy.

It calls for prevention of global warming and protection of the environment by promoting energy efficiency and removing reliance on fossil fuels.

Deregulation in the energy sector is addressed within a framework of stable supply and environmental protection.

The government would also formulate a basic plan on energy supply and demand prescribing long-term and comprehensive policy measures on energy, as well as selective research and development of energy-related technology.

According to the bill, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry would prepare a basic energy plan, which would be subject to Cabinet approval and a review at least every five years.
