Government and ruling coalition officials on Monday agreed to cut the salaries of all Diet members by 10 percent in light of the nation's severe financial situation.

They also agreed to submit the bills necessary for implementing the pay reduction during the current extraordinary Diet session, which runs through Dec. 7.

The Liberal Democratic Party proposed the idea during a meeting of senior members of the government and the three coalition parties, honoring a campaign pledge during the runup to the House of Councilors election.

At the meeting, Tadamori Oshima, chairman of the LDP's Diet Policy Affairs Committee, asked the LDP's coalition partners for their cooperation.
