OSAKA -- A man in Osaka Prefecture has been given a restraining order for battering his wife, the first such case since a new law against domestic violence went into effect Oct. 13.

The Osaka District Court on Friday ordered the man in his 60s to stay away from his wife for six months and forced him to vacate their home for two weeks. The case is the first time a restraining order related to domestic violence has been imposed in Japan, following the introduction of the Law on Prevention of Spouse Violence and Protection of Victims, said Juri Yukita, an attorney for the wife.

According to Yukita, the woman in her 40s married the man about 20 years ago and he began to beat her immediately after their first daughter was born.
