A Liberal Democratic Party panel agreed Friday that it will begin discussions on six main themes to create a medium- to long-term vision for the nation, LDP officials said.
The panel, led by former Justice Minister Okiharu Yasuoka, agreed to discuss proposals to help Japan maintain peace and gain further trust from other countries, the officials said.
It agreed to discuss ways to make Japan a country that rewards citizens for their efforts and a place where each person can feel richness in life, feel proud and have hope, the officials said.
The panel will exchange views on making Japan more open to other parts of the world. It also calls on regions to stimulate local economies and society.
Set up under the LDP headquarters on national strategies, the panel plans to draw up proposals on each theme by the end of the regular Diet session next year and finalize the national vision by fall 2002, the officials said.
The panel will meet once a month, they said, adding it will invite former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone to the next meeting Wednesday.
Friday was the first time that LDP lawmakers belonging to the headquarters, which was set up under Prime Minister and LDP President Junichiro Koizumi in May, had met since June 7.
