The government laid out conditions this week to Kenya for the continuation of a Japanese-funded project to expand the African country's capacity to generate electricity, Japanese officials said.
Tokyo expects Nairobi to confirm in writing its intention to continue the domestically disputed hydroelectric project and continue dialogue with local residents over environmental and social issues, Senior Vice Foreign Minister Seiken Sugiura told Kenyan Ambassador Mary Donde Odinga on Wednesday.
Sugiura said Kenya, which is suffering from a power crisis, should be prepared to hold talks with Japan if the country is found to be responding insufficiently to environmental and social concerns.
