The three ruling coalition parties have agreed to try to reintroduce multiple-seat constituencies for the Lower House in major cities, coalition officials said.
The Liberal Democratic Party, New Komeito and the New Conservative Party agreed Thursday to submit a bill amending the Public Office Election Law to the Diet session that opens on Thursday.
Under the current House of Representatives electoral system, introduced in 1994, 300 representatives are elected from single-seat constituencies and 180 are chosen by the proportional representation system.
