The U.S. Embassy in Minato Ward, Tokyo, was to reopen today after being closed Wednesday for security reasons following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
In a news release issued at 5 p.m., the embassy strongly recommended U.S. citizens to "review their personal security precautions" and called on organizations and institutions associated with the American community in Japan to institute "heightened security measures."
The embassy said Tuesday's attacks "do not appear to be related to any previous threat to U.S. facilities in Japan and we have no information of any threat specific to Japan."
The embassy will continue to monitor the situation and keep the American community informed of developments as they affect Japan, it said.
American nationals should tune in to local radio stations of the Armed Forces Network for additional bulletins, the embassy said, or consult the Web sites usembassy.state.gov/tokyo and travel.state.gov
