Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Tuesday that production of its low-emission, fuel-efficient GDI engine has topped 1 million units since its launch in May 1996.
As of Monday, production of the GDI engine totaled 1,000,032 units, MMC said in a release. GDI stands for gasoline direct injection.
Of the total, the 1.8- and 2-liter in-line four-cylinder engines accounted for the most engines manufactured at 537,144 units.
MMC said the engine reduces carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption. Currently, 13 of its 22 models, excluding trucks and buses, feature the engine.
