OSAKA -- The 71-year-old owner of a liquor store was fatally stabbed during an attempted burglary at his premises in Osaka's Sumiyoshi Ward early Monday morning, police said.

The victim was identified as Kimio Nose. He reportedly died from multiple stab wounds to his neck, chest and other parts of his body.

His daughter, Masako Kadowaki, 37, saw her father struggling with a knife-wielding man, police said, adding that the assailant fled from the scene immediately after Kadowaki cried out.

Investigators believe the suspect broke into the store to commit a burglary, although nothing was stolen.

According to police sources, Nose confronted the suspect and began struggling with him.

The suspect fled after stabbing Nose at around 4 a.m., police said.

Investigators said the suspect is about 175 cm tall and is probably in his 20s or 30s. He was reportedly wearing black clothing with a hood covering his face.
