A powerful typhoon churning south of the Japanese archipelago dumped massive amounts of rain on areas from western Japan to the Tokyo metropolitan region Monday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, Typhoon Danas was moving northwest at 15 kph about 220 km southeast of Cape Shiono in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, the agency said.

The typhoon, the 15th of the season, may change direction to head northward and hit regions stretching from the Kii Peninsula in western Japan to the Tokyo area Monday afternoon or early Tuesday at the latest, it said.
