Kyoto will host an international ministerial conference in March 2003 addressing various water-related issues, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Government ministers in charge of water-related issues are expected to take part in the conference, along with representatives of related international organizations, the ministry said. The conference will take place from March 22 to 23.

The government is planning to invite some 800 participants from around the globe to discuss what can be done to tackle problems such as water shortages, pollution and flooding, the ministry said.

The conference is part of the Third World Water Council forum events scheduled March 16 to 23, 2003, in Kyoto and neighboring Shiga and Osaka prefectures. It will be chaired by the land, infrastructure and transport minister.

The previous World Water Council forum was held in March 2000 in the Netherlands.
