MATSUE -- Mayor Masahiro Nishio of Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, said Wednesday a U.S. Marine band from Okinawa will participate in Saturday's celebration of the 60th anniversary of Izumo's incorporation despite protests from residents.

Citizens' groups outraged by a recent series of criminal incidents allegedly committed by U.S. military personnel stationed in Okinawa have called on Nishio to withdraw the invitation for the band to join in the city's celebration.

But Nishio said the incidents in Okinawa are "altogether a different matter" and should not affect the festivities.

"In the United States where the idea of marching bands originated, (the band) is highly regarded for its high-level artistry and performances," he said.
