A second runway at Narita airport is scheduled to open for business in April, a month earlier than initially planned, the head of the airport operator said Monday.
Toru Nakamura, president of the New Tokyo International Airport Authority, told a news conference that the operator is expected to advance the opening of the 2,180-meter runway, part of the 2,500-meter runway the authority plans to build.
The airport currently has only one 4,000-meter runway. The second, shorter runway is designed to accommodate short-haul flights such as those to and from other Asian cities.
There are normally several months of testing and certification required before opening a runway to air traffic.
