Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Tuesday told his Cabinet ministers to take additional steps to deal with rising unemployment.
"I want you to tackle seriously the problem of unemployment," Koizumi was quoted as saying in the meeting with ministers.
The government announced earlier in the day that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate hit a record high 5 percent in July.
