Nine people died, two went missing and five others were injured Sunday in accidents on rivers, mountains and seas across Japan, according to a Kyodo News survey.
As of 4 p.m., Fukui and Ehime prefectures had two casualties each, and Chiba, Aichi, Gifu, Hyogo and Shimane prefectures one each.
The two victims in Ehime Prefecture were a young man and a woman who were found in the bottom of the Omogo River. in the village of Mikawa.
One of the two victims in Fukui Prefecture was identified as a 2-year-old boy from Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, who drowned while swimming on the beach in the town of Takahama.
Temperatures soared in many parts of western Japan, with Hiroshima seeing its high so far this year at 37.9 degrees, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
